We Have a Home at the Truckee-Tahoe Airport!

Hello, Friends!

It is with great excitement that we announce that the Truckee Tahoe Airport District Board of Directors has unanimously approved a lease for the Truckee Roundhouse Makerspace. We have a home! The makerspace model perfectly aligns with the airport’s interest in supporting STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) Education and provides a home for community members to make, create, and collaborate.

The decision did not come easily, however. A lot has been going on behind the scenes since we last saw most of you at the Maker Show in May. The idea for a partnership was presented to the board in the spring of 2015 followed by a presentation by Morgan Goodwin to the board, a series of negotiations, and a number of meetings. By late summer, we were able to develop a mutually beneficial agreement and the airport board unanimously approved the lease at the August board meeting.

Improvements to the 3,400 square-foot warehouse space have begun; after which we will need some time to move equipment in and finish the needed upgrades. Opening will likely be in spring/summer 2016.

In the meantime, we are currently raising funds and collecting equipment for the space, including tools for metalworking, woodworking, and technological arts, among others. In the next few weeks we will be announcing a tax-deductible tool donation drive and will be asking for your help! (To donate now, click here for more information.) We will not only be looking for tools but for our friends and supporters to spread the word about the need for tools that are in line with the activities that will take place in the space.

The Truckee Roundhouse Board of Directors would like to thank Truckee-Tahoe Lumber, Porter Simon, the Sierra Business Council, and each of you who have supported our efforts thus far. We would also like to extend a HUGE thank you the Truckee Tahoe Airport District for believing in this project and wanting to support a community space that will bring so much to our region. And if you see Hardy Bullock, The Director of Aviation and Community Services at the airport,  give him a high five because we couldn’t have done it without his unwavering support and many hours of hard work!!
