Sierra Expeditionary Learning School Climate Change Project
As part of a climate change project, sixth-grade students from SELS (Sierra Expeditionary Learning School) spent time at the Truckee Roundhouse in May of 2025, transforming recycled materials into powerful messages of action and hope. To promote greener transportation, the students spent three sessions learning to weld and used upcycled metal from old cars to build a custom art piece and a bike rack. The students learned basic graphic design and used a vinyl cutter to create environmental messages for the bike rack, as well as a QR code linking to their climate change podcast. Additionally, they laser-engraved environmental poems onto stone to inspire others. Climate data was painted as stripes onto the car parts, illustrating the warming of our planet. This project blended creativity, technical skills, and environmental stewardship—showcasing how creating public art can support meaningful environmental action and change.
